A Tribute to Lala

On a quiet Friday evening in mid-November 2025, my family and I attended a memorial for Lala Mneyan at the Folk Arts Museum; a warm, heartfelt celebration of her life one year after her passing. The gathering was hosted by her husband, Vano Dadoyan, the museum’s director, Lusine Toroyan, and their close family friend, Karen. Throughout the evening, anyone who wished to speak was invited to share their stories, memories, and love for Lala.

Although I never had the chance to meet Lala myself, I felt compelled to be there. My teachers often spoke of her with such admiration that I was inspired to learn more about her life, her work, and the impact she had on those around her. I wanted to stand among the people whose lives she touched and take part in honoring her legacy.

Lala was known throughout Armenia as a teacher of teachers; deeply respected and dearly loved. She was a gifted artist, ethnographer, and master of folk arts, someone whose creativity and dedication shaped both her students and her community.

What moved me most that evening was the profound sense of respect and gratitude that filled the room. Here in Armenia, people genuinely uplift those who have given their best to others. The stories shared were full of warmth, humor, and resilience. Through them, I caught glimpses of Lala’s spirit: her generosity, her artistry, her ability to bring out the good in people, and of course her love for Armenia.

Even without having met her, Lala inspired me. She reminded me to bring my best to those around me, to honor the craft I practice, and to recognize the beauty in community.

Below are some photos from the evening. Lala was a felt artist, and in her memory, Vano donated one of her works: an Armenian Tree of Life (Կենաց Ծառ).
